How your diet might help you quit smoking | Health and Fitness

By MyHealthNewsDaily staff

Eating fruits and vegetables may help some people quit smoking, a new study suggests.

In the study, smokers who ate the most fruit and vegetables were three times more likely to be tobacco-free for at least 30 days than those who ate the least amount of fruits and vegetables, the researchers said.

The results held even after the researcher?s took into account factors that could influence people?s likelihood of successfully staying away from smoking, including the participants? age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, household income and how frequently they exercised, drank heavily or used illicit drugs.

The study also found that smokers with higher fruit and vegetable consumption smoked fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first cigarette of the day and scored lower on a commonly-used test of nicotine dependence.

?We may have identified a new tool that can help people quit smoking,? said study researcher Jeffrey P. Haibach, a graduate research assistant at the University of Buffalo.

However, the study showed an association, and not a cause-effect link. More research is needed to confirm the findings, and identify the possible mechanisms that could explain how eating fruits and vegetables may help smokers quit.

Haibach and colleagues surveyed 1,000 smokers ages 25 and older in the United States in telephone interviews. Fourteen months later, participants were contacted again, and asked if they had abstained from tobacco use during the previous month.

To be included in the study, participants had to have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, and have been currently smoking daily or on some days at the study?s start.

Several explanations for the findings are possible: people who consume a lot of fruits and vegetables may be less nicotine dependent, or may have a decreased desire to smoke, the researchers said.

Fruits and vegetables are also high in fiber, which may give people a sense of satiety or fullness so that they feel less of a need to smoke. Smokers sometimes confuse hunger with an urge to smoke, Haibach said.

And unlike some foods which are known to enhance the taste of tobacco, such as meats, caffeinated beverages and alcohol, fruits and vegetables may actually worsen the taste of cigarettes, Haibach said.

The study was published May 21 in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

Five disturbing moments in film

By Cody Delistraty

The upcoming Ridley Scott vehicle ?Prometheus? is practically a shoo-in?to make?big bucks at the box office, but it?s also a great bet for plenty of new nightmare fodder. A particular scene, in which an alien infiltrates the body of Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), a young scientist aboard the ?Prometheus? vessel en route to the alien home world, was one of the most disturbing parts of the film for Rapace and her costar Michael Fassbender.

?It?s something that?s literally under your skin and already makes you feel kind of queasy,? Fassbender told the AP. ?With any luck, millions of people will be suffering nightmares from that hectic scene ... ?

In honor of?Fassbender?s wish for nightmares, we?ve put together a list of our favorite?disturbing scenes that have cost us many sleepless nights. (Proceed to video links?with caution.)

Our?top five most disturbing moments in film

Orion Pictures

5. ?The Silence of the Lambs? (1991) -- Clarice kills Buffalo Bill
In a scene that carries massive amounts of tension, we see Jodie Foster?s Clarice Starling stumbling in the dark through the night vision goggles of serial killer Jame Gumb, known as Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). The scene seems to last forever as Buffalo Bill slowly stalks her with no music or tricks for added effect. When he eventually cocks his gun, Clarence hears it, turns, and fatally shoots the antagonist -- a disturbing, yet satisfying end to this beautifully drawn out scene. The extremely close and creepily lurking presence of Buffalo Bill combined with the knowledge that he plans to flay her for his suit of skin?ratchets up the disturbance factor.?

New Line Cinema

4. ?The Evil Dead? (1981) -- Molesting shrub
Trees aren?t usually scary. But, then again, one usually assumes they?re standing still and keeping their branches to themselves. Not the case in Sam Raimi?s cult horror film that mixes tongue-in-cheek plotting, campy acting, and legitimate scares. Raimi has since said that he regrets using the scene where a tree chases down a young woman in a forest. Thankfully he went out on a limb, and the film stands as a classic of low-budget horror. It demonstrates how pushing the envelope can create a slice of cinema where you?re not sure whether you should laugh or hide your eyes.

20th Century Fox

3. ?Alien? (1979) -- Alien chest burster
It?s always a surprise to see an alien burst from a writhing man?s chest, but it was even more of a surprise to see it done so realistically in 1979 when special effects were in their nascent stages (?Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope? was released only two years earlier). The alien chest-burster scene has left its mark on sci-fi history as the perfect execution of what seems like a ridiculous and implausible cinematic moment. John Hurt?(it sure did!) convincingly chokes and croaks in epic fashion and?undoubtedly left film fans with a frightening breakfast table vision for years to come.

2. ?Funny Games? (1997) -- Anna?s abrupt murder
Austrian director Michael Haneke asks the audience to confront their own expectations and sit through the sickening murder of an innocent bourgeois family. Not surprisingly, audiences didn?t approve (the original and 2008 remake?couldn't even gross a?combined $8 million). Yet, the ending scene in which the mother Anna (Susanne Lothar) is tied up and casually tossed off a boat to die after it appeared that she would set herself free is both startling and questions the way we separate what we see in film and what happens in real life. The scene is never violent or gory, but it asks us to wonder why we view violence as entertainment when, in the real world, it?s usually not the good guys that get in the last blow.?

1. ?The Exorcist? (1973) -- Father Damian exorcises the demon

Warner Bros.

It?s the realistic nature of this classic supernatural horror film that affords it the most disturbing scene of all time. When Father Damian Karras (Jason Miller) finally exorcises the foul demon from 12-year-old Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair), he throws himself out a window and?down a flight of stairs to kill himself and the demon that had taken to possessing him. The combination of such a young girl committing violent sex acts, spewing profanity, and being generally vile perfectly complements the realistic way in which the film is shot. The innocent being possessed by demons is a supernatural idea that has been around for thousands of years; ?The Exorcist? makes it real.

Razer rolls out Taipan ambidextrous gaming mouse, we go handson

It's not the mouse we expected to see here at E3, given what slid through Uncle Sam's FCC fingers a few weeks ago, but Razer has unveiled its new Taipan gaming mouse here at E3 2012. Apparently, Razer has learned to love lefties from the jump with its most recent rodent, as the Taipan is an ambidextrous unit suitable for any gamer. The outside of the Taipan is swathed in tactually-pleasing matte black plastic, with a glowing Razer logo in the palm rest and a clickable scroll wheel ringed in similar neon green lighting. It's got nine programmable buttons in all: right and left click, the clickwheel, plus two buttons just south of the scroller and two more embedded in each of the Taipan's flanks.

In addition to its ergonomic design, it's got one 8200 dpi sensor under the hood to precisely track two-dimensional movements, plus a second optical sensor for z-axis tracking -- so it knows when you've lifted the mouse off your desk and keeps your cursor right where you left it. Furthering this focus on ultra precise mousing, the Taipan is a 32-bit peripheral and has a 1,000Hz polling rate, which means your cursor moves exactly when you want it to. Naturally, it uses Razer's Synapse 2.0 technology, so after initial set-up the Taipan brings your settings to any new PC as soon as you plug it in. It goes on sale next month for $79.99, and if you're lookin to learn more in the meantime, check out the PR after the break.

Aung San Suu Kyi's 'test run' outside of Myanmar (+video)

On her first international trip since 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi is in Thailand to attend a World Economic Forum summit on Friday. Next month she will travel to Europe, collecting while there the Nobel Peace Prize awarded her in 1991.

Not for nearly 25 years has Aung San Suu Kyi dared step outside her homeland. Not even to see her husband as he lay dying in Britain. If she ever left, she feared, Myanmar?s military government would never let her return home.

Determined never to give up, the woman who has become an icon not only for her own people but for democracy activists worldwide refused to give the generals an opportunity to sideline her. She put up with 15 years of house arrest rather than risk becoming an exiled irrelevance.

Now she is on her first international trip since 1988, visiting neighboring Thailand to attend a World Economic Forum summit on Friday, in a sign of her confidence in recent reforms in Myanmar (also known as Burma).

Today, though, her first full day abroad, she must have felt right at home.

Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi spent the morning in the town of Mahachai, home to Thailand?s largest community of Burmese migrant workers. Thousands mobbed her before she addressed the crowd from the balcony of a community center.?

Around 2.5 million impoverished Burmese have fled their country in search of jobs in Thailand ? an illustration of how badly Myanmar?s economy suffered under nearly half a century of military rule.

Sorting out that mess is one of the prime tasks facing Myanmar?s nominally civilian government. The political reforms the government has pushed through over the past 12 months ? including partial parliamentary elections in April that Aung San Suu Kyi?s party won by a landslide ? are generally seen as a first step toward economic recovery since they have prompted Western nations to suspend damaging economic sanctions.

On Friday, at the World Economic Forum, Aung San Suu Kyi will be addressing the sorts of Asian movers and shakers whom Myanmar is counting on to invest in the country?s economic revival. Businessmen from around the world have recently been pouring into Yangon, the country?s commercial capital, seeking opportunities as Myanmar opens up to the rest of the world.

Aung San Suu Kyi?s trip to Thailand is a sort of test run, though nobody seriously expects the Myanmar government to turn her back when she flies home to Yangon this weekend.

?Next month she sets off on a more ambitious journey, and one freighted with sentiment as much as with politics, to Europe.

Besides visiting Switzerland and Ireland, Aung San Suu Kyi will go to Britain, where she was living before she returned to Myanmar in 1988 to care for her ailing mother, and where her British husband died in her absence. She will also go to Oslo, to formally accept the Nobel Peace Prize that she could not collect in person in 1991, for fear of getting stuck outside her homeland.?

High Medical Costs Push Many Americans into Credit Card Debt ...

As medical costs continue to rise at an exponential rate, more and more Americans are being forced to pay for health care with their credit cards. And this trend is threatening to drown hundreds of thousands of people in credit card debt.

The average American household holds almost $2,000 in credit card debt that is directly attributable to medical costs, according to a report from the Huffington Post.

This statistic helps explain why more than a million Americans sought debt relief by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last year.

Medical Costs Lead to Credit Card Debt

The Huffington Post recently offered some staggering statistics that reveal the unsustainable costs of medical care in the United States:

  • Credit card debt. Among 1,000 adults surveyed by Davos, a research and policy center, the average cardholder had $7,145 in credit card debt. Of this sum, an average of $1,678 was owed to health care providers. Remarkably, almost 50 percent of households surveyed had used their credit card to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses.
  • Rising costs of care. The rapidly inflating cost of medical care threatens to make this trend even worse. Sources say that, in 2011, the cost of health care rose almost 6 percent, far outpacing the rate of inflation. And the average family with job-based health insurance will spend $20,000 on health care this year, which is roughly 40 percent of the average family?s income.
  • Lack of insurance. In addition to the rising costs of care, more and more Americans are unable to afford health insurance. Last year, more than 25 percent of people between the ages of 16 and 64 did not have health insurance at some point during the year. Without insurance, many of these people were forced to use credit to pay for necessary medical care.

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and Credit Card Debt

As mentioned above, hundreds of thousands of families with credit card debt have turned to Chapter 7 bankruptcy to address their debt problems.

In Chapter 7, filers may be able to eliminate some or all of their unsecured debts, including overdue credit card payments and overwhelming medical bills, as well as other debts like payday loans or utility bills.

Of course, the outcome of each case depends on the unique nature of each individual filer?s debt problems. Nevertheless, many people have found welcome relief in bankruptcy court.

For more information on Chapter 7 bankruptcy, or other debt relief strategies, contact a local bankruptcy lawyer today.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama sought to take advantage Monday of the fundraising prowess of former President Bill Clinton, the most reliable deliverer of Democratic dollars, despite their history of testy relations and differences on campaign tactics.

Tied with his likely Republican challenger in the polls and facing a summer of economic uncertainty that could pull the United States back toward recession, Obama needs the help.

Clinton and Obama were sharing top billing at a trio of events in New York City, bringing hundreds of thousands of dollars to Obama's re-election campaign.

The two have patched over a personal rift from the 2008 campaign when Obama defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton in a bitter Democratic primary. But Clinton caused some heartburn in Obama's campaign last week by remarking that Republican Mitt Romney had a "sterling" business record ? an assertion that undercut Democrats' criticism of Romney's decisions at the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Clinton's larger point was that Obama is the better choice to steer the economy, and the White House denied that Clinton "made news." Still, the televised remark gave Republicans campaign gold just as the government released a disappointing report saying the United States created far fewer new jobs in May than expected ? a big political blow for Obama.

Obama and Clinton also are on opposite sides of a close Democratic congressional primary contest in New Jersey. Clinton also campaigned last week for Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett. Barrett faces Republican Gov. Scott Walker in a special recall election contest on Tuesday but has seen little backing from the Democratic Party or its standard-bearer, Obama.

Still, Clinton's ability to deliver campaign dollars and his record as a sound campaign strategist make him an asset to the Obama campaign that apparently outweighs any drawbacks.

Obama campaign bundler and billionaire investor Marc Lasry was holding an exclusive reception Monday night, followed by a gala at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. The evening was to conclude with an event dubbed "Barack on Broadway" at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Obama will return to Manhattan next week for a fundraiser at the home of "Sex and the City" actress Sarah Jessica Parker.

Asked about Clinton's comments on Romney, White House press secretary Jay Carney said the "issue isn't whether someone succeeded in the private equity world where the purpose is to maximize profits for investors and shareholders. The question is whether that is the right vision for creating jobs."

Clinton and Obama were focusing their message Monday on economic opportunity. Polls show that economic trends are likely to determine the election, a development that could help Romney if the economy sags significantly. Obama and Romney were tied at 46 percent in Gallup polling last week of national election preferences.

Obama's campaign released a video of campaign manager Jim Messina urging supporters to "stay focused, work hard and ignore the ups and downs." The campaign included a map listing eight undecided states: Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida.

Clinton recently predicted for CNN an Obama victory in November by 5 or 6 points, with the economy the determining factor. The interview also revisited the two men's different characterizations of Romney's record running Bain Capital, and the role of super-rich private investors. Clinton said such firms can do "good work" and should not be demonized across the board. He also said Romney had had a good business career.

"The real issue ought to be, what has Gov. Romney advocated in the campaign that he will do as president? What has President Obama done and what does he propose to do? How do these things stack up against each other?" Clinton said. "That's the most relevant thing."

Lasry, head of the hedge fund Avenue Capital, told CNBC last week that private capital investment as practiced by Bain Capital can do worthwhile things. He shrugged off Obama's recent references to investment choices he claims have ravaged jobs for the sake of investors' profits.

"I think it's politics," Lasry said.

About 50 people were expected at Lasry's home for the $40,000-per-ticket reception. Tickets to a 500-person gala at the Waldorf-Astoria began at $2,500. Those who contribute $35,800 or raise $100,000 get access to a smaller reception with Obama.

The concert at the New Amsterdam Theater was expected to draw 1,700 people. Tickets for that event started at $250, the Obama campaign said.

Three winners of an online ticket contest will attend both the gala and concert and were expected to meet the current and former presidents.

While Obama was in New York, Romney was on the West Coast to attend fundraisers in Portland, Ore., and Seattle.

Monday night was not the first joint fundraising appearance by Obama and Clinton. The two appeared together and addressed supporters in late April at the Virginia home of Clinton adviser Terry McAuliffe.

Think Investing Is Too Risky For You? Think Again! ? Yapperz ...

brazil soccer jerseysLearning about stock markets is critical to making wise investment decisions and earning returns. You should always look at how each company has performed before investing money into their stock options. This article is packed with stock market tips that can help you make money.

Our Team Brazil Store has a huge selection of brazil soccer jerseys along with a huge selection of Brazil Football Merchandise and Apparel. This coupled with our competitive prices for Brazil National Team Jerseys is why we are the fastest growing fan shop online. Make FansEdge your destination for Team Brazil Jerseys and your source for products that express your Team Brazil fandom.

When looking at company, carefully scrutinize how equity is matched up to the voting rights in the company. Sometimes, corporate management teams hold only five percent of your stock, but the voting power control can be around 70%. You should probably avoid investing in these stocks if you want to stay in control of your investment.

One tip is to locate stocks that have growth rates slightly more than average, but not drastically so. Stocks with growth slightly above average have more accurate valuations and tend to generate the types of returns expected. High-growth stocks are typically in hot demand, which pushes prices up even higher and they ultimately have trouble meeting the inflated demands of money-hungry investors.

It is not necessary to pay too much attention to daily ups and downs of the stock market. The market is constantly changing, and if you worry excessively about the short-term movement, nothing good will come out of it. Staying calm and keeping your eyes on the long term is a better strategy.

Do not forget to exercise your right to vote if you happen to own common stocks. You should review the company's charter, you could have voting rights with respect to making significant changes in the company, or other. Voting happens during a company's annual shareholder meeting, or it can happen through the mail by proxy voting.

Begin by investing just a small amount into a particular stock. Do not start out by investing all of your savings or capital. If the stock makes money, gradually dip your toes in a little more. If you invest too much in the beginning, you increase the risk of you losing large sums of money to the market.

It is generally best to follow a constraint strategy. That means searching for unpopular stocks that still offer good value. Try to find companies that are undervalued. The stocks that every investor wants to get in on typically sell at an inflated price. That may mean no room to grow. There is hidden gold waiting in the ranks of strong companies that are flying under the radar of most investors.

brazil soccer jerseysNote the value of a stock as well as price. Perhaps this stock would make a good long term investment. 'Family Feud' TV host Richard Dawson dies at 79

NEW YORK (AP) ? Richard Dawson, the wisecracking British entertainer who was among the schemers in the 1960s sitcom "Hogan's Heroes" and a decade later began kissing thousands of female contestants as host of the game show "Family Feud" has died. He was 79.

Dawson, also known to TV fans as the Cockney POW Cpl. Peter Newkirk on "Hogan's Heroes," died Saturday night from complications related to esophageal cancer at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, his son Gary said.

The game show, which initially ran from 1976 to 1985, pitted families who tried to guess the most popular answers to poll questions such as "What do people give up when they go on a diet?

He made his hearty, soaring delivery of the phrase "Survey says..." a national catchphrase among viewers.

Dawson won a daytime Emmy Award in 1978 as best game show host. Tom Shales of The Washington Post called him "the fastest, brightest and most beguilingly caustic interlocutor since the late great Groucho bantered and parried on 'You Bet Your Life.'" The show was so popular it was released as both daytime and syndicated evening versions.

His swaggering, randy style (and British accent) set him apart from other TV quizmasters. He was known for kissing each woman contestant, and at the time the show bowed out in 1985, executive producer Howard Felsher estimated that Dawson had kissed "somewhere in the vicinity of 20,000."

"I kissed them for luck and love, that's all," Dawson said at the time.

One of them he kissed was Gretchen Johnson, a young contestant who appeared with members of her family in 1981. After a decade together, she and Dawson wed in 1991. They had a daughter, Shannon.

Dawson reprised his game show character in a much darker mood in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film "The Running Man," playing the host of a deadly TV show set in a totalitarian future, where convicts try to escape as their executioners stalk them. "Saturday Night Live" mocked him in the 1970s, with Bill Murray portraying him as leering and nasty, even slapping one contestant (John Belushi) for getting too fresh.

The British-born actor already had gained fame as the fast-talking Newkirk in "Hogan's Heroes," the CBS comedy that starred Bob Crane and mined laughs from a Nazi POW camp whose prisoners hoodwink their captors and run the place themselves.

Despite its unlikely premise, the show made the ratings top 10 in its first season, 1965-66, and ran until 1971.

"We ran six years," Dawson once quipped, "a year longer than Hitler."

Both "Hogan's Heroes" and "Family Feud" have had a second life in recent years, the former on DVD reissues and the latter on GSN, formerly known as the Game Show Network.

On Dawson's last "Family Feud" in 1985, the studio audience honored him with a standing ovation, and he responded: "Please sit down. I have to do at least 30 minutes of fun and laughter and you make me want to cry."

"I've had the most incredible luck in my career," he told viewers, adding, "I never dreamed I would have a job in which so many people could touch me and I could touch them." That triggered an unexpected laugh.

Producers brought out "The New Family Feud," starring comedian Ray Combs, in 1988. Six years later, Dawson replaced Combs at the helm, but that lasted only one season. Steve Harvey is the current host.

Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in 1932 in Gosport, England. When he was 14 he joined the Merchant Marines, serving three years.

He first got into show business as a stand-up comedian, playing clubs in London's West End including the legendary Stork Room. It was there, in the late 1950s, he met blond bombshell Diana Dors, the film star who became known as Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe. They married in 1959 and divorced in the late 1960s.

Dawson landed roles in U.S. comedy and variety shows in the early 1960s, including "The Steve Allen Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Then his performance as a military prisoner in the 1965 film "King Rat" led to his being cast in "Hogan's Heroes," which truly made him a star to American audiences.

After that, he was a regular on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" and "The New Dick Van Dyke Show."

Meanwhile, he became a frequent celebrity contestant on game shows, including both daytime and prime-time versions of "The Match Game."

While still a panelist on "The Match Game," he began hosting "Family Feud," where his popularity grew to such levels that he was mentioned as a frontrunner to win the "Tonight Show" host chair to succeed Johnny Carson, who at the time was considering retirement. Though Carson stayed put, Dawson made appearances as a guest host.

Dawson is survived by his widow, Gretchen, their daughter Shannon, two sons, Mark and Gary, from his first marriage, and four grandchildren.

Johan Santana pitches first no-hitter in Mets' history

NEW YORK (AP) ? For more than 50 years, the New York Mets chased that elusive no-hitter. Johan Santana finally finished the job.

Santana pitched the first no-hitter in team history, helped by an umpire's missed call and an outstanding catch in left field in an 8-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

After a string of close calls over the last five decades, Santana went all the way in the Mets' 8,020th game.

"Finally, the first one," he said. "That is the greatest feeling ever."

He needed a couple of key assists to pull it off.

Carlos Beltran, back at Citi Field for the first time since the Mets traded him last July, hit a line drive over third base in the sixth inning that hit the foul line and should have been called fair. But third base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it foul and the no-hitter was intact ? even though a replay clearly showed a mark where the ball landed on the chalk line.

"I saw the ball hitting outside the line, just foul," Johnson told a pool reporter.

The umpire acknowledged that he saw the replay afterward but declined to comment.

"It was in front of his face, and he called it foul. I thought it was a fair ball," Beltran said. "At the end of the day, one hit wasn't going to make a difference in the ballgame. We needed to score more runs and we didn't do that."

Hometown kid Mike Baxter then made a tremendous catch in left field to rob Yadier Molina of extra bases in the seventh. Baxter crashed into the wall, injured his shoulder and left the game.

Making his 11th start since missing last season following shoulder surgery, Santana (3-2) threw a career-high 134 pitches in his second consecutive shutout. Relying on a sneaky fastball and the baffling changeup that's always been his signature, he struck out eight and walked five with wind gusting up to 30 mph.

"Amazing," Santana said after tossing the majors' third no-hitter this year. "Coming into this season I was just hoping to come back and stay healthy and help this team, and now I am in this situation in the greatest city for baseball."

Before the game, Mets manager Terry Collins said he planned to limit Santana to 110-115 pitches all season.

"I just couldn't take him out," a choked-up Collins said afterward.

Born in 1962, the Mets have been built on pitching when they've fielded their best teams. But neither Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver nor Dwight Gooden could throw a no-hitter for the Mets ? though all three are among the seven pitchers who tossed one after leaving the team.

Philip Humber is another one. He pitched a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox at Seattle on April 21, and Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels no-hit Minnesota on May 2.

Following the game, Santana addressed his teammates in the clubhouse. He thanked them and said: "Yeah, baby! Believe it!"

"I'm really happy for them," said Boston manager Bobby Valentine, who managed the Mets from 1996-2002. "That's been an albatross over the pitching in that franchise forever, since '62. One of the best pitchers they've ever had threw it and that also gives credibility to it."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez congratulated Santana in a message on Twitter, calling him a "golden left-hander" and "Giant Johan."

"What pride! Long live Venezuela!" Chavez said in the message.

Santana got a warm ovation as he headed out to the mound for the ninth inning, and the two-time Cy Young Award winner quickly retired Matt Holliday and Allen Craig on shallow fly balls as frenzied fans high-fived each other and captured video of it all on their cell phones.

With the crowd of 27,069 on its feet, World Series MVP David Freese went to a 3-2 count before his foul tip was caught by Josh Thole, just activated from the disabled list earlier in the day.

Santana pumped his left fist, slammed it into his glove and shouted as Thole showed the ball to plate umpire Gary Cederstrom and then went running out toward the mound.

"I don't think anybody expected that tonight. Everything came out perfect for him," Beltran said. "It should mean a lot for him after battling last year with the injuries. ... I'm not happy about it, but at the same time he's a good man and I'm happy for him."

The Mets rushed out of the dugout and mobbed Santana in a raucous dogpile as security guards tackled a fan who ran onto the field near home plate. Moments later, the pitcher raised his right arm and saluted the crowd, which was chanted his name from the eighth inning on. The big scoreboard in center flashed Santana's picture and read "No-Han."

"It was a crazy night ? my fastball moving all over the place," Santana said. "I don't think I've ever thrown a no-hitter in video games."

The Cardinals, the top-hitting team in the NL this season, should have had a hit in the sixth.

Beltran, traded by the Mets to San Francisco last July after 6? rocky seasons in New York, led off with a low liner over third. Television replays showed the ball nicked the foul line just behind the bag on the dirt, taking a small chunk of chalk with it. But Johnson called it foul immediately and Beltran eventually grounded out.

"It was tough because it happened so quick. I wasn't able to see anything," Santana said. "The umpire made his call and that was the end of it."

But with the next batter at the plate, Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo twice got in Johnson's face for heated arguments ? the two even appeared to bump each other. Rookie manager Mike Matheny also came out to protest, but nobody was ejected.

"It's not like there's going to be an asterisk by it. That's the way the game goes," Matheny said.

Almost exactly two years ago ? on June 2, 2010 ? Armando Galarraga lost a perfect game when first base umpire Jim Joyce admittedly blew a call that should've resulted in the final out. The miss in Detroit instead gave Cleveland's Jason Donald a single with two outs in the ninth.

Major League Baseball had considered expanding replay for this season to review fair-or-foul calls and trapped balls. The change required the approval of MLB and the unions representing the umpires and the players ? when there was no agreement, extra replay was postponed until at least 2013.

Santana cruised from there into the seventh, when Molina hit a one-out drive to deep left. Baxter, who grew up rooting for the Mets only 10 minutes from where Citi Field stands, raced back and made a terrific catch before crashing full force into the fence.

Baxter stayed down on the warning track as Mets trainers, players and coaches rushed out to him. Santana crouched in the infield with a couple of teammates and then made a few warmup tosses to stay loose.

"When I saw him running back onto the warning track and he made that play, it was amazing. An outstanding play and he saved the game," said Santana, traded to the Mets by Minnesota before the 2008 season. "All these guys, I want to thank them for what we accomplished."

Baxter walked off the field under his own power, with trainer Ray Ramirez holding the outfielder's left arm because Baxter had no feeling in it. The Mets said Baxter has a bruised left shoulder and was having more tests.

"I'm glad I had a chance to be part of it. It's a great night for the Mets," Baxter said.

Lucas Duda hit a three-run homer off Adam Wainwright (4-6) and drove in four runs, tying a career high. Daniel Murphy added three RBIs.

The San Diego Padres, who started play in 1969, are now the only team without a no-hitter.

The Mets' seemingly endless pursuit had become something of a famous quest, with at least one website dedicated to counting off their total number of games without a no-hitter each day during the season. Radio announcer Howie Rose often did the same when the opposing team got its first hit.

The list of pitchers who have thrown no-hitters after leaving the Mets includes Ryan and Seaver, both Hall of Famers, plus Gooden, David Cone, Mike Scott, Hideo Nomo and Humber.

Ryan, in fact, pitched a record seven no-hitters. Now the president of the AL champion Texas Rangers, he's still aware of the Mets' no-hit history ? or lack thereof.

"To me, it was phenomenal," he said through a team spokesman on the 37th anniversary of a no-hitter he threw for the Angels. "If you look at the history of their organization and the type of pitching they had at times, plus the fact they had pitchers throw no-hitters with other clubs."

Seaver came within two outs of a perfect game in 1969 and fell one out shy of a no-hitter in 1975, the previous time a Mets pitcher had made it into the ninth without yielding a hit.

NOTES: Santana's previous career high was 125 pitches. ... It was the eighth no-hitter pitched against St. Louis and the first since Fernando Valenzuela for the Los Angeles on June 29, 1990. ... Mets 3B David Wright said in a radio interview on WFAN that he won't talk to the team about a new contract until after the season because he doesn't want his situation to be a distraction for the team. Wright's salary is $15 million this season and New York holds a $16 million option for 2013, which gets voided if he is traded. After that, he can become a free agent. ... Replays showed Cardinals pinch-hitter Shane Robinson was hit on the hand by a pitch in the eighth. He started toward first, but Cederstrom called it a ball.
