Southpaw batter Tony Kemp (Vanderbilt) made some clutch hits this week that earned him a sparkling .362 ERA and Coca Cola?s Player of the Week. In last Monday?s game versus Y-D, Kemp went 3-4 with three runs batted in and a homer, putting Cotuit on top 6-2.

Kemp really shined in Cotuit?s outing against Thursday against Wareham, where the Kettleer added three runs to the score by cracking a two-out triple in the sixth inning, helping Cotuit to a 16-3 blowout win. Kemp now leads the team with 24 RBI.

Originally from Franklin, Tex., Kemp is a sophomore playing for Vanderbilt University. In 2012 he posted a .261 ERA and held an impressive 11-game hitting streak. He also set a career-high in an outing against Siena with four RBI going 4-for-5 with two triples and a double.

Ocala Star-Banner editor Brad Rogers?bought Patricia Levesque?s spin that the number of tests that some districts impose is the fault of the districts.

Patricia Levesque?s career has paralleled the rise of FCAT. In the 1990s she was a staff member for the Florida House Education Committee when, during Gov. Lawton Chiles? administration, the notion of testing to ensure accountability first emerged.

Over the years, Levesque rose in prominence, becoming an advisor to Gov. Jeb Bush, and finally commission of education under Bush. Today, she heads the Foundation for Florida?s Future, a Tallahassee think tank established by Bush whose primary mission is to ensure his education reforms ? including standardized testing ? continue to move forward.

I talked to Levesque last week about the growing concern that our schools are becoming test factories. She said FCAT was never intended to become what it has, that it was supposed to be an ?outcome reference? test, not the primary determinant of students? and teachers? futures.

Moreover, she said there is no consistency among Florida school districts as to how standardized tests are delivered. She referred me to a recent analysis the Foundation for Florida?s Future did of 11 large Central Florida school districts, including Marion County.

Perhaps Rogers should have talked to FairTest?s Bob Schaeffer. Schaeffer sent me this email response:

?There is no question that some county school boards mandate additional standardized exams on top of the FCAT. However, Levesque blithely ignores the fact that Florida politicians, spurred by the foundation she heads, have improperly attached so many consequences to FCAT scores that many local administrators feel a spate of practice exams is necessary to get their students ready to do their best on ?the big test.? With the FCAT used to determine third-grade promotion, high school graduation, school grades, educator bonuses, voucher eligibility, and now teacher retention, it?s easy to understand why administrators think test prep is so important. ?Enough already? is definitely the right reaction. But to stop testing overkill in Florida, the first step must be to ratchet back the misuse and overuse of FCAT scores.?

Levesque, a skilled political operative, is doing everything she can to deflect blame from her and her boss. Throwing districts under the bus is not beneath her as a means to an end. Schaeffer?s response brings focus back to where?she wanted to misdirect Rogers from. Levesque obviously doesn?t want to talk about the legislation she?s had a hand in writing which misuses and overuses FCAT scores.

Brain response to emotion altered in BD youth | Mental Health Hub

Results from a US study show that adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) have altered activation in certain brain regions in response to facial expressions of emotion.

Furthermore, the researchers found that adolescents with the mood disorder exhibited problems processing and/or disengaging attention from facial expressions of emotion compared with their mentally healthy peers.

The findings come from a study of 20 euthymic adolescents with BD who were aged 9-17 years and had a family history of the mood disorder and 21 mentally healthy adolescents without such a family history. There were no significant between-group differences regarding mean age, gender distribution, or IQ.

All of the participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain while viewing happy, sad, or neutral facial expressions.

Overall, there were no significant differences between adolescents with BD and controls regarding task performance, although BD patients showed a trend for reduced accuracy when identifying the gender of the happy and sad faces.

However, adolescents with BD exhibited significantly reduced activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and significantly increased amygdala/hippocampal activation while viewing facial expressions of emotion compared with controls.

Furthermore, adolescents with BD showed increasing levels of activation in the superior temporal sulcus/insula and visual cortex between the early and late phases of exposure to each block of facial expressions.

By contrast, activation in these areas fell slightly among controls between the early and late phases of exposure.

This suggests that mentally healthy individuals efficiently process emotional faces and then decrease allocation of neural resources, whereas BD patients have a gradually increasing response to faces, ?possibly reflecting difficulty processing emotional facial expressions,? comment Amy Garrett (Stanford University School of Medicine, California) and team.

They conclude in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: ?Our findings support models of deficient prefrontal and excessive amygdala activation in patients with BD compared with healthy controls, and add new information suggesting that youth with BD have aberrant timing of superior temporal sulcus and visual cortical activation to facial expressions.?

House drought bill keeps $5 billion subsidy targeted by reformers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Farmers would get another round of the $5 billion a year "direct payment" subsidy, targeted by reformers as wasteful spending, in a Republican-drawn offer of disaster aid for farmers hurt by the worst drought in half a century.

The package, unveiled on Friday, combines drought relief with a one-year extension of the farm program. If passed by the House next week and accepted by Senate, it would end a farm-bill stalemate by deferring work until 2013, when cost-cutting pressure may be intense.

An estimated $1.2 billion in drought relief would be provided under the bill, half to livestock producers and half to crop growers. While crop insurance will provide a safety net for many growers, livestock producers face parched pastures and rising feed costs.

The direct payment, paid to cotton, grain and soybean growers regardless of need, was marked for elimination in farm bills in the House and Senate this year. Budget hawks and environmentalists said the direct payment is wasted money, considering the farm sector enjoys boom times and the huge federal deficit.

An advocate for small farmers, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, called for the House to "vote down this dirty extension bill." The bill would cut soil and water conservation programs while keeping the direct payment, it said.

Two-thirds of the continental United States is under moderate to exceptional drought and 40 percent of U.S. counties are listed as agricultural disaster areas. The worst drought conditions since 1956 fueled demands for Congress to act.

House Agriculture Committee chairman Frank Lucas said the package responded to "devastating drought conditions afflicting most of our country" and, by extending the 2008 farm law expiring on September 30, would end any doubts about the farm program for the new crop year.

Collin Peterson, the Democratic leader on the committee, said he opposed an extension unless it was a vehicle for a speedy compromise on a successor to the 2008 law that expires on Sept 30. There is virtually no way for Congress to meet that deadline without resorting to unusual parliamentary methods.

House Republican leaders are sitting on a $491 billion farm bill that was approved by Lucas' committee earlier this month because it faces strong opposition. Majority Leader Eric Cantor says the Senate-passed farm bill is unacceptable.

The Senate bill could save $23 billion over 10 years compared to $35 billion in the House bill. The House bill would raise crop support prices by up to 40 percent while the Senate would eliminate almost all traditional farm subsidies and, instead, compensate growers for low prices and poor yields.

Food stamps for the poor would be cut by $16 billion in the House farm bill, the largest cuts since the 1990s. Democrats want to eliminate the food stamp cuts while some Republicans want deeper cuts throughout the farm bill.

The disaster bill would revive disaster programs that share feed cost for livestock producers and compensate them for animals killed by drought as well as programs to assist fruit, vegetable, tree and fish farmers. The so-called SURE program for crop growers also would be extended.

On Thursday, Senate Agriculture Committee chairwoman Debbie Stabenow said she was ready to make a legislative sprint and complete a new, full-scale farm bill. "If Congress does what Congress always does and kicks the can down the road with a short-term extension, there will be no reform, direct payments will continue, we'll lose the opportunity for major deficit reduction and we'll deliver a real blow to our economic recovery," said Stabenow.

In the month since Pool.com and Quintaris, partners in providing business and technical support for new gTLDs, began allowing consumers to pre-order Internet domain names in likely new registries that will compete with existing ones like .com, .net or .uk, the total number ?spoken for? has averaged 10,000 per day.

There is no cost to the consumer until the name is registered.

According to Tony Farrow, head of business development at Quintaris, ?Now that ICANN has set a timeline for introduction of the new domain name registries, demand has been strong and growing.? ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the organization responsible for authorizing the use of registries. It intends the new gTLDs to be brought online in 2010.

The list of likely gTLDs ? those that companies, communities and individual investors have said they intend to pursue ? has also grown, from 50 to 60, in the last 30 days. Among the new domain name registries added to the pre-order list are: .vin, .radio, .sucks, .futbol and .football. The last two will offer an additional opportunity to help assess the market demand for names in multiple languages.

?This isn?t the only way the pre-order program can do more than offer the ?proof of concept? we initially sought,? Farrow said. ?It can also serve to help build the business model of anyone interested in operating a registry.?

On the basis of a simple request, Quintaris will add a gTLD to the pre-order program and help add a statistical basis to the registry operator?s business plan. The company also offers a set of Web-based marketing tools to accelerate adoption.
